THE contribution of Victoria's Italian community to the life of the state was recognised yesterday with the official opening of the $3.5 million Piazza Italia gardens in Argyle Place, on the corner of Lygon Street in Carlton. First proposed in December 1998 by then premier Jeff Kennett during a visit by then Italian president Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, the Argyle Square redevelopment features traditional Italian hand-crafted porphyry paving surrounding a huge 45-square-metre solar clock.

The ceremony was followed with performances by the Banda Bellini 43-piece marching band, the 30-voice La Voce della Luna choir, the Victorian accordion sextet from Trent, Italy, singer-guitarist Sergio Ercole, The Signoras comedy duo Carmelina Di Guglielmo and Edwina Entwhistle and Mattopancetta male comedians Adam Mattaliano and Brendon Bacon.
