Piazza Italia Gardens Open In Carlton
Monday January 30, 2006
THE contribution of Victoria's Italian community to the life of the state was recognised yesterday with the official opening of the $3.5 million Piazza Italia gardens in Argyle Place, on the corner of Lygon Street in Carlton. First proposed in December 1998 by then premier Jeff Kennett during a visit by then Italian president Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, the Argyle Square redevelopment features traditional Italian hand-crafted porphyry paving surrounding a huge 45-square-metre solar clock.
