NEWCASTLE'S newest community meeting place, Harbour Square, will be officially opened today.

The centrepiece of the multimillion-dollar Honeysuckle development project, the piazza-style open space between Crowne Plaza Hotel and the Boardwalk will come alive with free entertainment over the weekend to mark the occasion.

A ship's bell, signifying the links to the area's maritime past, will ring in the opening at 10 o'clock this morning.

The opening of the community square is the culmination of 12 years of planning and development on the vacant former industrial land.

Construction barricades around the Boardwalk project came down in July, allowing pedestrians and cyclists access to six kilometres of promenades and trails linking Carrington to Nobbys breakwall.

The historic Tree of Knowledge Park at Wickham has been completed and the Maritime Museum at Lee Wharf is expected to open in mid 2005.

As part of the celebrations there will be free Live Sites events in the Harbour Square each day from 11am to 4pm, with everything from stilt walkers to fire breathers and face painting.

Newcastle Live Sites is an initiative of Honeysuckle development Corporation, The Newcastle Alliance, Newcastle City Council and the NSW Ministry for the Arts.

The feature performance for the weekend is the Stalker Theatre Company, recently returned from a tour of France and Belgium, where they amazed audiences with their aerial acrobatics using giant catapults. They will appear tonight and tomorrow night.

Live Sites manager Michael Cohen said that in between the free performances the public could enjoy the harbour, waterfront restaurants and cafes.
