VISIT Italy for the day without leaving the region.
Italian Day is tomorrow, when Crown Street Mall will be transformed into a vibrant Italian piazza.
Known as ``Tutti in Piazza", this ninth event of its kind is staged as part of the broader Italian Week.
Huge crowds are expected to join in the festivities at which delicious food, cooked by various Italian association members, will be on sale.
Dishes include a vast array of home-made sweets, panini with Italian meats and sausages, steak sandwiches, pasta and pizzette.
There will be other stalls too.
Wollongong's Lord Mayor Alex Darling will launch the event at 11am at the amphitheatre.
Entertainment will be provided by local primary school students and artists dressed Italian-style. Guest performers include a folkloric group from Myrtleford, Victoria.
Rides, a jumping castle and face painting will be among the child-friendly activities available.
In the ``Search for a Star" competition, contestants aged between six and 17 will perform a piece on an Italian theme.
A spokesperson from the Illawarra Association of Teachers of Italian (IATI) said the Crown Street Mall has been a very supportive sponsor over the past nine years.
To celebrate Italian Republic Day on Monday is ``Coffee Culture Night", held at Nickelangelo Trattoria in Warrawong from 7pm. The event will include a barista competition.
A workshop on coffee will be held prior to the competition. Supper, coffee and music will be provided. Bookings are essential. Call Adriano on 42251144.
Throughout the week David Jones will feature a window display with a Vespa theme.
You can also see the exhibition of posters by local primary and high school students created on ``The Fountains of Italy" theme in the foyer of Wollongong Council Chambers. The winner from each year group will receive an award during Italian Day celebrations at the Crown Street Mall amphitheatre.
Finally, the Gala cinema in Warrawong will be showing a subtitled film called L'Ultimo Bacio (The Last Kiss).
